John Fitzgerald Kennedy was elected as the 35th President of the United States.

At 43, Kennedy is the youngest man ever elected President. Kennedy is also the first President of the Roman Catholic faith.

Kennedy defeated Vice President Richard M. Nixon by fewer than 115,000 popular votes.

The election was so close that only one vote per precinct would have made Nixon president.

But Kennedy won a clear majority of votes (303 to 219) in the Electoral College.

In the coming days, Kennedy will be sure to begin announcing his cabinet. Now we will go live to Kennedy's election head quarters for an interview with his campaign manager."
